Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, the machine which allowed for the quick, mechanical separation of cotton seeds from plants. Because the seeds were being separated at a faster rate, more slaves were needed to plant and harvest cotton. This, paired with the already important issue of slave ownership, helped start the Civil War.
