In the 1920s Hawaiian culture was mainstream. Everyone wanted to have a ukulele (which is not even Hawaiian) and people wanted to live the Hawaiian life. The first Aloha shirts were made out of extra kimono fabric. When the first shirts were made they were loved by tourists due to the style and feel of the fabric. later on musicians and actors like John Barrymore and Shirley Temple were wearing the shirts.
