After being battered by four major German offensives in early 1918, the Allies launched a sweeping counter-offensive on 18 July, relying heavily on tanks to achieve the crucial breakthrough that had evaded them for so long. It turned the direction of the war, forcing a German retreat on all sides, and was planned by French forces commander General Ferdinand Foch. Germany's allies begin to crumble: Bulgaria agrees to an armistice by the end of September, Austria is crushed in late October, and Turkey is compelled to declare a cease-fire a few days later. Germany is in disarray, and on November 9, Emperor Wilhelm II is forced to abdicate. On November 11, a German team met Foch in a remote woodland setting north of Paris and agreed to an armistice. Among the requirements are that Germany must quickly cease hostilities and leave enormous regions it has seized in less than a fortnight; it must surrender vast amounts of war material; and all Allied prisoners of war must be released. At 5:20 a.m., the agreement is signed. The truce comes into effect mere hours later, at 11:00 a.m.World War I has ended.
