28 juin 1914 - Crown Prince Assassinated
Description:
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie paid a visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia was a province of the empire at the time, which several Bosnians and neighboring Serbia despised. Gavrilo Princip, a nationalist Bosnian Serb student, opens fire on the pair as they drive through the city in a motorcade, killing both. Austria-Hungary accuses Serbia of being to blame, triggering a series of events that will bring the European powers into war in weeks, lured in by a web of military alliances.
