William Murdoch was the first person in 1792 to use coal gas for his house lighting. Before this discover, people used substances like olive oil and sesame oil. Murdoch replaced liquid fuels and used gas from coal. He discovered this in Redruth, Cornwall when he was by a fire and put his coal dust from his pipe into the fire. However, the rise of coal usage lead to a drastic increase in pollution.
