Samuel Slater constructed the first cotton mill on the Blackstone River, Rhode Island in 1793.
His device was the first operational water-powered machine that could produce cotton. Before this, people had to use looms which took a long time and were inefficient for large productions. With the cotton mill, people could control the machine to make sure the fabric was being produced at the best quality without having to use a lot of their energy.
