1 janv. 1255 - Franconian Notation
Description:
• Franco of Cologne, Ars cantus mensurabilis (c. 1260):
o “the art of singing meter”
o Defines a way to define individual notes
• tables of note values [Hoppin 335]
o also defines rests
• rests [Hoppin337]
• brevis recta & brevis altera (foll. modal system);
• tempus (duration of breve) was a ternary value
• perfection, imperfection; minor and major SBs
• codification of rules for reading perfection & imperfection
• Also, dots become predecessor of measure lines and they “divide up the perfections”
1. long before long is perfect
2. single breve must form part of perfection
3. when 2 breves, 2nd must be brevis altera
4. added sign for divisio modi (strich, later a dot)
5. defined rests
6. 2 note ligature his norm; notes were with or without propriety and perfection (adding or subtracting tails).
• propriety and perfection of ligatures [Apel 89 & Hoppin 338]
o two basic ligature patterns – podatus and clivis
o how to read in which direction tells how to read the two-note neumes.
This breaks us from the modes completely.
