Study of the motet is not really of the motet; it’s much more about the development of notation. Have some sense of how notation was developed, though.

Remember that motets start as clausula cum littera, used probably just like tropes were to amplify the liturgy. Though, over time, they start to go off the track as moralizing texts and not really used for the liturgy and moreso for student songs. This might also be implicit in how they’re found in the manuscript.

• Clausulae
o Discant : where both parts are in rhythmic modes.
o Taking the Melismatic sections of the solo portions of the chant
o Troping this…becomes ‘cum littera’ or a ‘clausulae with words’
• ‘mo’ meaning more and ‘tet’ meaning words
