Began the concepts of Rhetoric in music
i. Aka Arrangement; meant organizing the speech using all or some parts of a traditional design.
1. Exhortation (exordium): attracts attention and imposes them to listen
2. Narration (Narratio): sets forth the facts
3. Exposition (Explicatio) – defines the terms and opens the isssues to be proved
4. Proposition (Partito) – clarifies the points at issue and states exactly what is to be proved
5. Amplification (Amplificatio) – sets forth the arguments for and against and offers proof
6. Refutation (Refutatio) – refutes opponents’ arguments and restates the accepted conflictions
7. Conclusion (Peroratio) – sums up arguments and makes a final appeal to the emotions of the audience
ii. Exhortation (Exordium): portion in the first major cadence, in which each voice enters with the subject being imitated, or, at least, in which the principal expressive character of the work is established
iii. Body of the Composition (Corpus Carminis): Central portion of the composition, consisting of several periods, in which, the argument attempts to by means of various rheotical argument, impose upon the soul in order that its meaning be better understood and considered
iv. Conclusion: the final cadence, sometimes with a “supplement” in which additional melodic activity lets the emotions “more clearly penetrate into the souls of the listener”
