1 févr. 1519 - Cortés Cuba left for the mainland

Description:

Velázquez permitted Cortés to go on an expedition to the mainland on the basis that he only made relations with the tribes and did not conquer or settle.

The fleet contained:
- 11 well-armed ships
- Roughly 600 Europeans (soldiers, sailors, carpenters, sail-makers, adventure-seekers)
- 100 Cuban slaves
- 20 women (nurses, cooks, mistresses)
- Horses

Just before Cortés was due to leave, Velázquez had second thoughts and suspected that Cortés would conquer the mainland, taking a lot of fame away from him. He decided to stop Cortés' expedition. However, Cortés got advance warning and left early before Velázquez could reach him.
