"Frodo looked back for a moment over his shoulder. He could no longer see his friends. The Riders behind were falling back: even their great steeds were no match in speed for the white elf-horse of Glorfindel. He looked forward again, and hope faded."

Frodo after splitting up from the group to run away from the Black Riders. Frodo continued and then was involved in a pincer attack by the Black Riders to stop him from reaching Rivendell. This failed and Frodo was able to pierce through their pincer attack and then met their leader face to face and was about to exchange blows until Glorfindel summoned a river to blow through the Black Riders.
