Machaut, born in the province of Champagne in north eastern France, was the most important composer and poet in fourteenth-century France. His reputation as a poet exceeded that of Chaucer, on whom Machaut exercised a profound influence, and his music has come to typify the French Ars Nova. Machaut composed the first unified polyphonic setting of the complete Mass ordinary.
