22 juin 1941 - Operation Barbarossa
Description:
operation Barbarossa was the codename for Hitlers invasion of the Soviet Union. operation Barbarossa started smoothly and Germany was able to push in. The Germans made it to Moscow before the Russian winter set in. Stalin called in troops from the Siberian front who were especially trained in harsh temperatures. The Germans were pushed back and so they dug in and waited for winter to pass. Hitler planned to cut off the Russians in the Caucasus (rich in oil), and then invade it. Hitler rerouted one of the armies (4th Panzer) south early, and left the 6th army alone in Stalingrad. The Russian army encircled the German army and they were forced to surrender. This caused the Germans to lose all progress and retreat
