Description:

France did a lot to help the American colonists during their war for independence from the United Kingdom. It is possible to argue that the American colonists would not have won the war if it had not been for the French assistance.
France was the first ally of the new United States due to its 1778 treaty and military support in the American Revolutionary War. The French had officially recognized the United States as an independent nation. France decided to back up the United states in its military efforts offering soldiers and sailors until they had full independence from Great Britain.
