1800-1864Inspired by Elizabeth Fry, they revived the role of deaconess from the Early Church. They founded a system of deaconess that worked in a variety of charities such as schools, orphanages, hospitals. They lived together in community while they served. By the 1880's there were over 14,000 deaconesses serving throughout the world.
