5 juin 1850 - Foreigners Tax
Description:
The story of nativist agitation in the diggings is a complicated one, but Anglo American opposition to Mexicans in the mines took three basic forms: individual incidents of harassment; mining district “laws” that excluded Mexicans and other non–U.S. citizens from particular areas; and a statewide foreign miners’ tax, approved in 1850, that charged foreign nationals twenty dollars a month to work the placers.
