25 juin 1914 - Note on Balkan States
Description:
The Balkan States were called the Powder keg of Europe as many countries had an interest in them, and a single incident could lead to a large conflict, even war. These countries were Turkey, Russia, and Austria-Hungary.
Turkey: Turkey had been in control over all Balkan states until the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913, when they split into Turkey, Serbia, Grece, and Bulgaria.
Russia: Wanted an outlet to the Mediterranean and bonded over their shared Orthodox religion.
Austria-Hungary: Annexed Bosnia-Herezgovina in 1908, fuelling slav nationalism.
