“Napoleon Dynamite” was released in six theaters on June 11, 2004, but its theatrical origins date back to that year’s Sundance Film Festival. Where it really started, though, is back in 2001, with a black-and-white short film, “Peluca,” that was the debut of the now-iconic character. The story as to how that came together starts with Hess meeting Heder at Brigham Young University. Both grew up with similar backgrounds and ran in the same circles once they got to BYU.
