Recognizing the importance of developing an efficient rail network, the Meiji regime brought Scottish merchant Thomas Blake Glover in 1968 to showcase the locomotive “Iron Duke” in Nagasaki, the first of its kind in Japan. This was the beginning of the development of one of the world's largest and most reliable rail networks.
