A nationwide strike of thousands of railroad workers and labor allies, who protested the growing power of railroad corporations and the steep wage cuts imposed by railroad managers amid a severe economic depression that had begun in 1873.

-Penn gov sent state milita, so ppl in Pittsburgh burned the railroad property/overturned locomotives

-more clashes arose across the country

-The 1877 strike left more than 50 people dead and caused $40 million worth of damage, primarily to railroad property.

-mainy railroad workers were fired and blacklisted

result: us creates national guard to enforce order at home
