The Louisiana Purchase was purchased from France for $15 million. It was 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. This purchase doubled the size of the United States. It also gave a powerful start to westward expansion. Even though the constitution didn’t give the president power to purchase land, Jefferson made the purchase.
