1 janv. 1953 - Watson and Crick: DNA

Description:

Two Cambridge scientists, James Watson and Francis Crick, discovered the structure of DNA. In the 1800s scientists knew that DNA existed and that it controlled the build of humans, however they lacked in the technology to research it. In the 1900s, electron microscopes and X-ray photography were used to observe minute substances in larger and finer detail; this allowed Watson and Crick to prove that DNA structure was present in every human cell.

Watson and Crick's discovery allowed other scientists to find the genes that causes genetic conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, haemophilia and sickle-cell anaemia. Knowledge of genetic conditions has improved diagnosis and treatment of them, with new uses like gene therapy, customised drugs, genetic engineering and genetic screening.
