1 janv. 1905 - Modern Surgery: Transplants

Description:

In 1905, the first successful transplant of the cornea was performed. During the First World War, surgeons developed techniques for skin transplantation. The first complete organ to be successfully transplanted was the kidney. Livers, lungs, pancreases and bone marrow can now also be transplanted. The first successful heart transplant was carried out by South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard in 1967. Unfortunately, the patient died of pneumonia 18 days later.

The problem for transplants is rejection. The success of early transplant operations was limited because doctors lacked effective immunosuppressants. Since the 1970s, researchers have developed increasingly effective immunosuppressants, making transplants safer and more likely to be successful.
