Description:
Robespierre and the newly formed Committee of Public Safety decided to have state-sponsored acts of violence. Some 300,000 suspected traitors and "enemies of the nation" were arrested, 40,000 of whom died either by execution or imprisonment. It ended with Robespierre's trial and execution.
This led to the installation of the directory since it really showed how important it was to balance the powers given to the government.
