30 mai 1765 - Virginia Stamp Act Resolutions

Description:

Patrick Henry, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, wrote seven resolutions condemning the Stamp Act in May 1765. The first four were passed by narrow margins, the fifth was was repealed, and resolutions six and seven were not passed. However, many colonists believed that Virginia had passed all seven. The resolutions argued that the unconsented taxation was unconstitutional. Colonial legislatures passed more resolutions condemning the Stamp Act, and they eventually organized the Stamp Act Congress. I agree that the Stamp Act will hurt my business. However, the insurrection that these Resolutions may incite could cause a full-scale revolution. This is unnecessary, and colonial disagreements should be discussed in a way that does not threaten to damage my livelihood.
