25 mai 1787 - Constitutional Convention

Description:

In Philadelphia of 1787, a group of politicians gathered together the first written constitution for any nation in the world. The articles of confederation were a major failure and needed immediate revision. The 13 colonies at the time were in quite disarray which is why it was quite remarkable that they put together the constitution in less than four months. Many people at the convention distrusted the idea of a democracy, and there was little agreement about anything. Roger Sherman of Connecticut said “ (People) should have as little to do as may be about the government” (Constitutional Rights Foundation). This begs the question of how many significant state leaders that were present at the convention attempted to oppose democracy for the United states. That number will never be confirmed, however there were constant debates and arguments about slavery, number of votes and representation per state and much more. The fact that the new governing document of the United States was decided by just 55 people in less than 4 months shows the fragile nature of the so-called American democracy at the time. Instead of a democracy, an oligarchy would more accurately represent the type of government the United States was at the time. That is because of how few people contributed to the making of the Constitution and enforcing it throughout the nation. As well as the lack of representation and diversity within those handful of people.
