1 déc. 1866 - Fetterman massacre

Description:

A massacre in December 1866 in which 1,500 Sioux warriors lured Captain William Fetterman and 80 soldiers from a Wyoming fort and attacked them. With the Fetterman massacre the Sioux succeeded in closing the Bozeman Trail, the main route into Montana.

result: sherman (commanding army in west) tried to fight them but never won. in 1868, the Soux (led by the Oglala band under Chief Red Cloud) said they wouldn't sign a peace treaty until the U.S. abandoned all its forts along the Bozeman Trail, and the U.S. agreed, leading to a win for Red Cloud.

In the east, public opinion turned against eh ineffective, brutal Indian wars. There were congressinal hearings about Sand Creek. Chivington became a civilian, but was never prosecuted. (the massacre was an example of western vigilantism). During grant's presidency (started 1869), Reconstructors in the south looked for solutions.
