15 nov 1777 - The Articles of Confederation were adopted by Congress

Description:

The articles of confederation had 13 different sections that were called articles. The effect that these articles had on the country created a confederation within the United States rather than a democracy. The people were not allowed to vote for members and legislations of the national government and congress, but rather only state decisions and leaders would then go and represent the state which left a weak central government. The constitutional convention followed after the articles, because the need for a Federal government became very apparent (Drexler). The almost immediate need for correction of the articles shows how big of a failure they were. The articles exemplified numerous non democratic ideals. In conclusion, at the time that the Articles of Confederation were in place, America was not a democracy. It was an oligarchy because there were only a handful of people that wrote and decided the legislations and the way the country was run and operated rather than citizens contributing to governmental decisions.
