In 1665, Robert Hooke developed a powerful microscope and published a book of images from his observations. In 1683, Leeuwenhoek developed a microscope and observed 'animalcules'. He sent his work to the Royal Society who gave it to Hooke, who used his microscope to confirm what Leeuwenhoek had seen. News of the discovery was spread widely and quickly as it was published in Philosophical Transactions by the printing press.
