In 1665, Robert Hooke developed a powerful microscope and published a book of images from his observations. In 1683, Leeuwenhoek developed a microscope and observed 'animalcules'. He sent his work to the Royal Society who gave it to Hooke, who used his microscope to confirm what Leeuwenhoek had seen.
