1 janv. 1660 - The Royal Society
Description:
The Royal Society, founded in 1660, was a society of scientists that aimed to promote secular understanding of science and improve people's understanding. It urged scientists and doctors to carry out their own experiments and share scientific knowledge, and was given recognition and credibility due to receiving a royal charter from Charles II.
The society published journals, such as their scientific journal Philosophical Transactions in 1665, which contained letters and summaries of experiments and observations carried out by many European scientists, contributing greatly to the spread of medical ideas. It also paid for English translation of scientific texts, making them more accessible.
The Royal Society had a significant impact on the way ideas about the causes of disease and illness were communicated, allowing a plethora of scientists to share and publicise their ideas, and also allowed these ideas to be mass-reproduced in different languages, due to the printing press, for a variety of people across Europe.
