Description:
The Father of the blues, W.C. Handy was born in 1873 in Alabama. He was instrumental in the popularization of blues music. In 1912, his song, "Memphis Blues," was the first blues song to be commercially published.
On top of his publishing success, he went on to do a lot of composing and is credited with organizing the first blues performance at Carnegie Hall in 1928.
