18 août 1920 - First Wave of Feminism

Description:

This desire to be seen and heard is what formed the first wave of feminism. Led by a group called the suffragists, this movement eventually led to women being given the right to vote in 1920. However, this did not prevent women from being held to these expectations. Women were still expected to follow the role of the caregiver. If they didn’t, they would be viewed as unladylike. Stereotypes like these were harmful because they undermined women who didn’t fit them. Men had this idea of what it means to be a woman and if you didn’t fit that you weren’t really considered a woman. And in a world where men were superior and women were inferior, it’s easy to see how these people were treated. They already treated women (even the ones who acted the way they wanted them to) like objects, so how were women who aren’t seen as woman-like treated?
Although slavery had been abolished at this point, women of color still had not been granted the same rights as white women. Segregation was still enforced and women of color were expected to stay in their roles and know their place.
