1 mars 1862 - McClellan advances toward Richmond

Description:

McClellan was slow (Lincoln wanted him to quickly strike). Confederates counterstruck then Jackson marched rapidly northward through the Shenandoah Valley, threatening Washingron. Lincoln sent some of McClellan's forces to protect the Union capital. Jackson returned to Richmond to bolster E. Lee's forces. They lost 20,000 (Union lost 10,000). McClellan didn't exploit those loses, Lincoln ordered a withdrawal. Richmond stayed secure.
