-SOuth knew that a decisive military triumph was unlikely, so they wanted a battlefield stalemate and peace negotiations, but that hinged on lincoln loosing the election of 1864
-Lincoln needed to show northern he was winning war, so he got new generals
-Lincoln and Grant afraid that heavy losses and military stalemate would lose him the reelection.
-Repubicans Got more nervous when confederate cavalry men burned Chambersburg (souther PA) and threatened Washington. Grant punished farmers in the Shenandoah Valley who helped the cavalrymen by sending in Sheridan, who used a "scorched-earth" campaign to destroy resources that would have been important to confederates.
-June: Republicans put Lincoln as their nominee. wanted to beat south and add an amendment to end slavery. they liked his political strategy.
-Republicans become "National Union Party to attract border-state and democratic voters
-Andrew Johnson- Lincoln's running mate, Tennessee slave owner/Unionist Democrat
-look for Dem views on what McClellan was about in event "Dems nominate McClellan..."
-Republicans didn't like McClellan's inconsistency, called Peace Dems traitors

during: lincoln wins after Sherman's Georgia victories. Republican victory (in part due to Union troops).
