Cause: fugitive slave act-> many abolitionists give up nonviolence approachdescription: 20 African Americans exchange gunfire w/ Maryland slave catchers (2 killed).
effect: federal authorities indicted 36 black ppl and four white ppl four treason and more. Pennsylvania jury acquitted one defendant and the gov dropped the rest of the charges.
