--some think that war will be short (north thought they had better nums and power, south thought cotton and support from england/britain would allies)
-some thought lincoln needed more than 75,000 men for 3 months (like William Tecumseh Sherman, former army officer, superintendent of a Louisiana military school, rejoined U.S. army)
