Before: messages from fire-eaters (Rhett) who had wanted secession since Compromise of 1850. Lots of conventions (dec. 20, 1860) to dissolve the union happened throughout the south along with mobs to attack local Union supporters.
SC-lots of unusual rules so they were able to have a unanimous decision about secession
