The Banco de Costa Rica was founded on April 20, 1877 under the name of Banco de la Unión. It was born with the purpose of being a new banking option among the existing ones and its initial functions were to lend money, keep checking accounts, receive deposits and make collections, among others. Only seven years after its foundation, the Banco de Costa Rica became the only issuer of money and the first administrator of public revenues, through a contract called Soto-Ortuño and which was in force until 1896.
