2 mars 1955 - Claudette Colvin

Description:

9 months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white person, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin did the same thing. She was arrested and jailed, and later went to court as a plaintiff in Browder v Gale, the case that overturned bus segregation in Alabama. However, Colvin was not credited and fell into relative obscurity compared to Parks. She thinks it was for a number of reasons, saying that the NAACP believed Parks would be a better icon because "Her skin texture was the kind that people associate with the middle class [...] she was an adult. They didn't think teenagers would be reliable." (Adler). Now, almost 70 years later, Colvin is finally receiving the recognition she deserves.
