Description:
Hundreds of civil rights activities were beginning a nonviolent march from Selma Montgomery. They were brutally attacked by state and local police who used clubs and tear gas and were cheered on by white onlookers.
Significance: Media coverage of this event caused national outrage. Martin Luther King called on religious leaders to act.
