Malcolm X was assassinated at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan, where he was going to give a speech. A makeshift smoke bomb was thrown into the auditorium before Malcolm X was shot in the chest, ankle and thighs.Significance: As one of the United States' most influential black leaders, Malcolm X's assassination was significant. The irony of his advocacy for violent responses to white aggression and his on violent death was also apparent.
Quote: "Fifty-seven years ago, on Feb. 21, 1965, one Black man shot and killed another Black man and changed the course of history."
