The Allied forces planned to invade Italy, wanting to knock the Italians out of the war and to encourage Germany to move troops from France to Southern Europe. The Allied forces finally were able to knock Italy out of the way when Mussolini's government collapsed. Rome finally fell on June 4th, 1944, two days before Allied forces opened up a Western front in Europe by invading the beaches of France.
