October Revolution
- The Provisional Government were weakened by the Kornilov affair and their continued support of the war
- Bolsheviks advocated ‘Peace, Land Bread’
- Painted Kerensky as weak and spineless
- The nation was leaning far conservative right due to fear of social and economic collapse
- Lenin needed to seize power before the Constituent Assembly elections were held in November. As the new government would be voted for and therefore legitimate in the eyes of Russia
- Takeover occurs with the systematic capture of communication centres, key installations like electric companies, key vantage points like bridges and railways and the Provisional Governement’s base in the Winter Palace
- 40,000 strong army intimidates the Cossaks, Cadets and Women’s Battalion defending the Winter Palace. Which causes them to immediately surrender
- The Aurora is commandeered and fires blanks at the Winter Palace
- Red Guards enter through a back door to the Winter Palace that was left open
- Kerensky escapes to a US embassy
- Provisional Government arrested and held at Peter and Paul Fortress
- Opening session of the Second All Russian Congress of Soviet in which Trotsky dimisses Menshevik and Socialist Revolutionary Party from Congress
- Bolsheviks announce their government as the ‘Government of People’s Commissars’ with Lenin as leader
