- Verdun's fortresses were constructed both above and belowground
- New strategy of bleeding the enemy dry
- Falkenhayn calls it 'Gericht'
- Gericht means court/place of judgement
- 3/4 of the entire French army was mobilised
- 'no longer in a civilised world'
- 'glimpse of hell'
- French slowly move artillery into place
- 200 rounds for each soldier killed
