The 14th Amendment stated: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside." This meant that any person born within the US territories and states was automatically a citizen. This increased the growing appeal to immigrants to move the the United States.
