Description:

On the morning of June 6, 1944, D-Day, the invasion of France began. Under the direction of General Eisenhower, who was promoted to the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops landed amidst stiff German resistance across five beaches in Normandy, codenamed Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha, and Utah. The landings would become the largest amphibious invasion the world had ever seen, as another 5,000 ships, 11,000 aircraft, and 50,000 vehicles assisted the invasion force. Because the weather had been poor, the Germans were caught off guard, especially since they were expecting the invasion to occur at the shortest point across the English Channel. Following five days of intense fighting, Allied troops were able to unite all five beachheads and begin the advance across northern France.
