Abraham Lincoln was the first president of the Republican Party, beating Douglas, Breckinridge, and Bell. He only received 40% of the popular vote. Many people liked him because he was well educated and was against slavery and had attempts at eliminating it. However, this lead to the civil war a couple years later. Some may think this is because Lincoln’s attempt at countering slavery and the actions he took for that.
