14 juill. 1877 - Great Railroad Strike

Description:

The Great Railroad Strike occurred as a response to the implementation of longer hours, smaller wages, and fewer jobs – all a result of the Panic of 1873. Thousands of railroad workers quit and proceeded to block rail service. Due to the chaos these workers caused, militiamen were ordered to end their strike. The Great Railroad Strike is significant because it was the first nationwide labor protest and it convinced labor organizers that workers across the nation needed to be better organized. This would lead to the organization of more labor unions and would ultimately help shape the labor movement.
