Seen as an anti-slavery "Jayhawker" and an iconic symbol of Bleeding Kansas, John Brown had a great influence on the future of the abolitionist movement and the importance of slavery. Mid-October of 1859, Brown organized a small unite of both whites and blacks to raid a government arsenal in Harpers Ferry. His goal was to distribute the stolen weapons to slaves so they could spark numerous amounts of slave uprisings.
