1 mars 1857 - Dred Scott vs. Sanford Case

Description:

The Dred Scott Decision played an essential role on the future of slaves living in free states. Dred Scott went to court to sue for his freedom. He defended himself by stating that he was a slave in a free state, therefore he should be free. The case was taken up to Supreme Court, and resulted in Scott losing his case because the justices found Dred Scott as property that had no legal rights. Eventually, the Supreme Court ruled that all African Americans, whether they were free or a slave, did not acquire citizenship from the United States.
